Proposed changed to restraining order statute

The Oregon Senate is considering this law, which would allow a judge to make an order protecting any animals of the parties when they find that a restraining order is necessary because of domestic violence.

  1. Is this proposal based upon need? Before I retired I practiced family law and cannot remember one case where animals were in need of protection. Issues of custody - yes.

  2. I've never seen a need for it. It seems a little strange.
